Selfies — Torö 01/01/22

The work of British artist and designer Harry Woodrow ( → ) is led by observation, the seeing of things and phenomena that hide in plain sight. Woodrow expands normal (approved) views and shows other ways of seeing and doing.

Harry Woodrow sees the introduction of the iPhone’s front-facing camera in 2010 as a hugely significant event that has shifted human behavior and consciousness in ways that we are only beginning to comprehend. His ongoing selfies project is his own way of coming to terms with these existential threats. In the images Woodrow wears a helmet specially constructed from a two-way mirror — he can see out, but any person or camera looking on sees only their own reflection and that of the surrounding environment. When aimed at his own obscured face, the artist’s iPhone captures an image of itself looking back at itself, in an infinite loop of reflective feedback.
